Gopher Football is Here!
Tomorrow night is the night! 6pm start time at TCF Bank Stadium, the Minnesota Golden Gophers take on the Buffalo Bulls! It is the 2017 season opener and with new head coach PJ Fleck at the helm, there has been a lot of buzz around the program.
After firing most of the coaching staff last year, including head coach Tracy Claeys, the team has turned toward PJ Fleck. He coached Western Michigan the past four seasons and last year led his 11-1 Broncos to the Cotton Bowl. The Sugar Grove, Illinois native only turns 37 this November and attended Northern Illinois University where he played wide receiver. After college he was able to manage a roster spot in 2004 with the San Francisco 49ers. However an injury ended his career as a player and shined a new light on the game, as a coach (www.mercurynews.com).
The Buffalo Bulls will be the first opponent for Fleck and the Gophers this year. The Bulls are coming off a dismal 2-10 season. Might be another long one as their offense and defense have significant weaknesses. The weakest part of their defense lies on the line. Where the Gophers strongest positions are at running back. Look for the Gophers to exploit this weakness with the likes of Rodney Smith and Shannon Brooks. The biggest question for the Gophers is their quarterback. They do not have a number one yet and the game is tomorrow. Demry Croft and Conor Rhoda will share snaps at the beginning of the season and whoever gets the hotter hand will take the lead (www.dailygopher.com).
It should be another average season for the Gophers, but with Fleck at the helm, the future looks bright. Stay in tune with the Gophers football team all season long as they look to defy the odds.
