Heisman Hopefuls!
The 2017 college football season is almost here and there are several players that have the Heisman Trophy in their sights. First off, last season was once again won by someone who no one expected would win, let alone heard of. That man, Lamar Jackson, Quarterback, Louisville. In the 2016 season, Lamar threw for over 3500 yards, 30 touchdowns, and ran for over 1500 yards with 21 touchdowns. He became only the third player ever to throw for 20 and run for 20 touchdowns in a season (foxsports.com). The only other two, Tim Tebow of Florida and Cam Newton of Auburn, not bad company. He is a favorite to win it once again but there has only been one repeat winner in the 81 year history of the award.
Other interesting names involving the Heisman hype are some players who burst onto the scene late last year. Saquon Barkley, running back, Penn State had a terrific season last year leading his Nittany Lions to their first Rose Bowl in eight years. Sam Darnold, quarterback out of USC also opened eyes late last year. After his terrific Rose Bowl performance, many said he could translate into an NFL star. Other notable names are Deondre Francois, quarterback, Florida State. His terrific athleticism and arm should have him a top the stat sheets this season, this guy can do it all. LSU hasn't had a star running back since, oh yeah, last year, with Leonard Fournette. A new running back is already been mentioned with the likes of Leonard. Derrius Guice is strong, speedy, elusive and his ability to make defenders miss puts him in elite company.
Watch out for these players and many more throughout the college football season! It is set to be a good one!
