Vikings Beat Saints in Peterson Return
The Minnesota Vikings defeated the New Orleans Saints on Monday Night Football 29-19. It was the home opener for the Vikings and they wanted to prove themselves on a national stage. There were many headlines heading into Monday's game. It was the return of Adrian Peterson to Minnesota after signing with the Saints this offseason. Dalvin Cook's debut as well as an entirely new offensive line for the Vikings.
Overall it was a solid and highly entertaining game. Good play on both sides of the ball for the Vikings and some flashes of brilliance from Sam Bradford and well as the promising rookie, Dalvin Cook. Not everyone looked good however. Adrian Peterson only got the ball six times for 18 yards and was not happy with head coach Sean Payton about his minutes. Sam Bradford however looked like the Heisman winning quarterback we all saw back in his Oklahoma Sooner days. He was 27 of 32 passing with 396 yards and 3 touchdowns, not a bad season debut for the veteran. Dalvin Cook also impressed on the ground, he had 22 carries for a 127 yards. That is a Vikings franchise rushing record for a running back in their first game! Minnesota State Mankato Grad, Adam Thielen looked great as well! The Detroit Lakes native hauled in 9 catches for a total of 157 yards!
The Vikings showed flashes like this at the beginning of last season as well and that did not turn out so great. It is tough to say the Vikings are legitimate just yet seeing that the Saints defense lacks talent on nearly every position, but it was a solid start, none the less. The Vikings travel to Pittsburgh next week to take on the Steelers. That will certainly be a tough test for Purple. Game time is at noon central at Heinz Field.
