The Yankees Pay Tribute to David Ortiz
Last Thursday marked the final game beloved Red Sox slugger David Ortiz played against his fierce competition, the New York Yankees. During his fortieth birthday last year, Ortiz announced his retirement after a lengthy career as a powerful hitter in the MLB, including 14 years as a Boston Red Sox team member. Beloved for both his incredible batting record as well as his kind, outgoing personality, Red Sox teammates and rival Yankees team members spoke highly of Ortiz, nicknamed, “Big Papi.”
In a remarkable display of sportsmanship and reverance, the Yankees gifted Ortiz with an oil painting by sports artist Justyn Farano as well as a leather-bound book signed with hand-written messages from Yankee players. Although Ortiz played his final game against the Yankees, his career is not over yet, he finishes out his career competing with the Red Sox in the playoffs.
This Thursday, October 6, the Boston Red Sox face off against the Cleveland Indians in the American League Division series of the 2016 MLB playoffs. With the excellent season the Red Sox have played so far, many are placing their bets on the Boston based team.
In fact, some baseball enthusiasts predict that this year’s World Series games will come down between the Chicago Cubs and the Boston Red Sox. Many would love nothing more than for David Ortiz to go out with a bang, winning the World Series. An equally exciting prospect is for the Chicago Cubs to beat their 100+ year curse and finally earn their pennant. Either way, this post-season round of games will not disappoint!
